Faculty Biographies

Alexis Kalergis, PhD, Course Director

Dr. Alexis M. Kalergis is a Full Professor at the Schools of Biological Sciences and Medicine at Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and an internationally recognized expert in immunology and microbiology. He earned his MSc and PhD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where his graduate work received the Julius Marmur Award, and later completed postdoctoral training at The Rockefeller University. Throughout his career, he has served as visiting faculty at leading international institutions and has authored more than 310 scientific publications and over 60 patent applications.

Dr. Kalergis has received numerous national and international honors for his contributions to science, innovation, and biotechnology, including recognition from the World Intellectual Property Organization. He currently directs the Millennium Institute on Immunology and Immunotherapy and serves on several scientific advisory councils. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led the development of a vaccine prototype and coordinated phase 3 clinical trials for an inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine used in Chile’s national vaccination program.

Dr. Elena Hsieh, Course Faculty

Dr. Hsieh earned her bachelor’s degree from University of California, Los Angeles and her medical degree from University of California, San Francisco. She completed her pediatrics residency at UCLA Medical Center and a fellowship in allergy and immunology at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. Board certified in Internal Medicine, she joined the faculty at UT Southwestern Medical Center in 2026 after serving as Associate Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where she directed the Jeffrey Modell Diagnostic and Research Center for Primary Immunodeficiencies.

A physician-scientist specializing in immune dysregulation and autoimmune disease, Dr. Hsieh’s research focuses on advancing precision medicine through immune profiling and genetic analysis. Her NIH-supported work has contributed to a greater understanding of lupus, inborn errors of immunity, and related autoimmune disorders. She has received numerous honors for her scientific and clinical leadership and is an active member of several leading immunology and rheumatology organizations.

Dr. Jonathan Maltzman, Course Faculty

Dr. Maltzman is Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Basic Science Research in Nephrology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. His labs studies tolerance, Tregs and immune responses to latent virus in solid organ transplant.

Dr. Monica Guzman, Course Faculty

Monica L. Guzman, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Pharmacology in Medicine, in the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Guzman did her undergraduate studies at the University of Guanajuato, Mexico, completed her Ph.D. in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics at the University of Kentucky. She was an Instructor in Medicine at the University of Rochester. She joined WCM in 2009.

Dr. Mark Anderson, Course Faculty

Dr. Anderson is a Professor in the UCSF Diabetes Center and a recognized expert in the genetic underpinnings of autoimmune diseases and the control of immune tolerance. He received his doctorate in immunology in 1992 and his medical degree in 1994 from the University of Chicago. He completed a residency and Chief Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota and went on to complete an Adult Endocrinology Fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. While at Harvard, Dr. Anderson developed a novel genetic mouse model of a human autoimmune disorder called Autoimmune Polyglandular Syndrome Type 1 (APS1) that involves a deficiency in the Autoimmune Regulator (Aire) gene. Through his work we have come to appreciate that Aire is a major checkpoint of immune tolerance in the thymus and his lab continues to further unravel mechanisms by which this pathway operates. Dr. Anderson has won several important awards including election to The Pew Scholars Program, The American Society of Clinical Investigation, The American Association of Physicians, and The UCSF Byers Award. Mark currently holds the Robert B. Friend and Michelle M. Friend Endowed Chair in Diabetes Research and also serves as Director of UCSF Medical Scientist (MD/PhD) Training Program, Research Director of the UCSF Diabetes Center, and also as Co-Chair of the Steering Committee of the UCSF Immunology Program.

Dr. Stephanie Eisenbarth, Course Faculty

Dr. Eisenbarth is the Chief of Allergy and Immunology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Eisenbarth is an internationally renowned immunologist whose research focuses on how dendritic cells, B-cells and T-cells interact to induce antibody responses. She is supported by grant funding from the National Institutes of Health and numerous foundations for her work studying genetic factors in allergy and translational immunology. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and numerous other professional associations, serves as the associate scientific advisor for the journal Science Immunology, and has published many peer-reviewed papers, editorials and review articles in journals including Science, Nature, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Immunity, Journal of Experimental Medicine and more.

Dr. Susan Bueno, Course Faculty

Dr. Susan Bueno is an Associate Investigator at the Millennium Institute on Immunology and Immunotherapy and Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, where she leads the Laboratory of Microbial Pathogenesis. She earned her Medical Technologist degree and PhD in Biomedical Sciences from University of Chile and completed postdoctoral training at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

Dr. Bueno’s research focuses on infectious diseases, host-pathogen interactions, vaccine development, microbial genetics, and diagnostic technologies. She has also completed research training at Texas A&M University, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and New York University.

Dr. Olivier Boyer, Course Faculty

Dr. Olivier Boyer is a Professor of Immunology and researcher at INSERM and the University of Rouen Normandy, where he leads the PAn’THER research unit focused on pathophysiology, autoimmunity, and immunotherapy. His work centers on immune regulation, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, and the development of innovative immunotherapies and biotherapies.

Dr. Boyer has contributed extensively to translational immunology research, particularly in autoimmune muscle, skin, and joint diseases, combining laboratory discoveries with clinical applications. He is widely recognized for advancing research in immunopathology and regenerative medicine.
