Elena Hsieh
Elena Hsieh earned her MD degree from University of California San Francisco (UCSF) in 2008. She is an Associate Professor of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology, and Pediatrics, Section of Allergy and Immunology faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She is the Director of the Jeffrey Modell Center for Primary Immunodeficiency and co-directs the Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Newborn Screen Program. She is also the director of the University of Colorado as a FOCIS Center of Excellence. The Hsieh Lab focuses on classical pediatric autoimmune disorders such as lupus, multiple sclerosis, and type 1 diabetes, as well as genetic immune dysregulation disorders. her lab has identified several novel human inborn errors of immunity that lead to severe multi-organ autoimmunity/autoinflammation and infectious susceptibility. It has also developed mouse models from homologous human mutations. Dr. Hsieh expanded her studies of immune dysregulation to Down Syndrome and COVID-19 disease given the type I interferon hypersensitivity observed in these disorders.
Anne Kasyoka Barasa
Anne Kasyoka Barasa is a Consultant Pathologist and Lecturer at the University of Nairobi Faculty of Health Sciences, where she serves as the Head of the Unit of Immunology within the Department of Human Pathology. She earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree in 2006, followed by a Master of Medicine (Pathology) in 2012, both from the University of Nairobi. She has a keen interest in Inborn Errors of Immunity (IEIs) and has attended several training workshops to advance her knowledge in the field, including a Diagnostic School by the Clinical Immunology Society in 2019, and an Advanced School by the International Alliance for Primary Immunodeficiency Societies (IAPIDS) in 2020. Her academic roles involve training both undergraduate and postgraduate medical students in Basic Immunology, Immunopathology, and Clinical Immunology. Additionally, she provided Clinical and Diagnostic Immunology Consultancy Services at the Kenyatta National Teaching and Referral Hospital. She has been actively involved in raising awareness about IEIs in Kenya, having organized and participated in several workshops and symposia (A-projects) to this end. She is the President of the African Society for Immunodeficiencies (ASID).
