Translational Research from the New Center for Human Immunobiology at Northwestern University

Organizer

Northwestern University FCE

Learning Objectives

After participating in the symposium, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the impact of differential mitochondrial metabolism on macrophages.
  • Determine the beneficial effects of anti-inflammatory therapies in ischemia/reperfusion injury in the heart.
  • Evaluate the contribution of alveolar T cells in lung injury.
  • Leverage naturally occurring mutations that increase T cell fitness to overcome immunosuppressive tumor microenvironments.

Moderators

Adam Williams

Adam Williams is an Associate Professor in the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Northwestern University. His lab focuses on identifying novel mechanisms of immune regulation in allergy by applying genomics- and genetics-based approaches at the single-cell level and across tissues. A major focus of his work is discovering genes and pathways that coordinate type 2 immune responses to promote allergic diseases—such as those in the lungs in response to airborne allergens and in the gut to food allergens—using both mouse models and human samples.

Nikita Mani

Nikita Mani recently received her PhD at Northwestern University and is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Sam Weinberg in the Department of Pathology at Northwestern University. There, she studies the immunomodulatory effects of lactate on Treg cell metabolism and function in a range of immunological mouse models.

Hsieh Elena 2022 07 21 1WEB

Elena Hsieh

Elena Hsieh earned her MD degree from University of California San Francisco (UCSF) in 2008. She is an Associate Professor of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology, and Pediatrics, Section of Allergy and Immunology faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She is the Director of the Jeffrey Modell Center for Primary Immunodeficiency and co-directs the Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Newborn Screen Program. She is also the director of the University of Colorado as a FOCIS Center of Excellence. The Hsieh Lab focuses on classical pediatric autoimmune disorders such as lupus, multiple sclerosis, and type 1 diabetes, as well as genetic immune dysregulation disorders. her lab has identified several novel human inborn errors of immunity that lead to severe multi-organ autoimmunity/autoinflammation and infectious susceptibility. It has also developed mouse models from homologous human mutations. Dr. Hsieh expanded her studies of immune dysregulation to Down Syndrome and COVID-19 disease given the type I interferon hypersensitivity observed in these disorders.

Anne Kasyoka Barasa

Anne Kasyoka Barasa is a Consultant Pathologist and Lecturer at the University of Nairobi Faculty of Health Sciences, where she serves as the Head of the Unit of Immunology within the Department of Human Pathology. She earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree in 2006, followed by a Master of Medicine (Pathology) in 2012, both from the University of Nairobi. She has a keen interest in Inborn Errors of Immunity (IEIs) and has attended several training workshops to advance her knowledge in the field, including a Diagnostic School by the Clinical Immunology Society in 2019, and an Advanced School by the International Alliance for Primary Immunodeficiency Societies (IAPIDS) in 2020. Her academic roles involve training both undergraduate and postgraduate medical students in Basic Immunology, Immunopathology, and Clinical Immunology. Additionally, she provided Clinical and Diagnostic Immunology Consultancy Services at the Kenyatta National Teaching and Referral Hospital. She has been actively involved in raising awareness about IEIs in Kenya, having organized and participated in several workshops and symposia (A-projects) to this end. She is the President of the African Society for Immunodeficiencies (ASID).
