New FCE Collaboration Travel Grant Recipients Announced

FOCIS awards the FCE Collaboration Travel Grant to facilitate communication and scientific exchange among centers in the FCE network by providing financial support for collaboration and / or research-sharing opportunities. This year we are pleased to announce two grant recipients – congratulations!

FOCIS Welcomes 5 New Centers to the FCE Network

FOCIS is proud to announce the newest additions to the FOCIS Centers of Excellence (FCE) community:

Centre for Advanced Clinical Immunology in Kenya (CACIK):

Academic Affiliations: Kenya Institute of Primate Research (KIPRE), Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Mount Kenya University, University of Nairobi, Moi University, and the Kenya Society for Immunology

The Centre for Advanced Clinical Immunology in Kenya (CACIK) seeks to bridge the research gap between researchers of immunology and clinical medicine under the umbrella of the Kenya Society for Immunology (KSI). The aim is to foster the development of immunology by increasing intellectual exchange between clinical and basic science to improve health and disease in Kenya.

FCE Director: Dr. Lucy Ochola

Clinic for Immunology along Sant Joan de Dรฉu

Academic Affiliation: University of Barcelona

CIS-UB is an abbreviation of โ€œClรญnic for Immunology together with Sant Joande Dรฉu in University of Barcelonaโ€ to summarize the cooperation of three central institutions in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The CIS-UB FCE will be focused on four main lines of actuations:

1-Clinical Immunology.

2-Immune-responses

3-Transplantation Immunology

4-Immunotherapy

FCE Director: Dr. Manuel Juan, MD, PhD

Center of Systems Immunology (CSI) Erlangen

Academic Affiliations: Erlangen Friedrich-Alexander-Universitรคt Erlangen-Nรผrnberg and University Hospital Erlangen

The broad thematic spectrum of both institutions facilitates cooperation across disciplines and faculties. The central location within the Medical Valley European Metropolitan Region Nuremberg (MV-EMN) creates ideal conditions for cooperation between science and industry. FAU and UKER have an outstanding strong track record in immunology. Infection and Immunity is officially designated as the number one research priority at the Medical Faculty at FAU, and this is reflected in the many ongoing research programs on the FAU campus revolving around clinical immunology.

FCE Director: Prof. Dr. med. Ricardo Grieshaber-Bouyer

Program of Glycoimmunology

Academic Affiliations: Institute of Biology and Experimental Medicine, and the University of Buenos Aries

The Program of Glycoimmunology will be integrated by four laboratories that work together on different but complementary areas of basic, translational and clinical immunology.

1- Laboratory of Glycomedicine
2- Laboratory of Functional and Molecular Glycomics
3- Institute of Biomedical Research in Retrovirus and AIDS (INBIRS) and associated with the University of Buenos Aires
4- Laboratory of Experimental Thrombosis and Immunobiology of Inflammation at the Institute of Experimental Medicine (IMEX) and associated with the National Academy of Medicine

FCE Director: Dr. Gabriel Rabinovich, PhD

Toulouse Center for Immune-mediated and Infectious Diseases (TOLERANCE)

Academic Affiliation: Toulouse University

Their ultimate and collective goals are to decipher the pathophysiology of immune-mediated diseases and to develop novel therapeutic strategies based on new knowledge. We aim to reach our goals by promoting creative translational and clinical research projects within the Center, and further developing collaborative ties at the international level with other Laboratories and FCE. In parallel, we aim to provide high-level immunology education to both MD and Biology students, to train tomorrowโ€™s leaders in inflammatory diseases and to promote early career development of talented young scientists and physician-scientists.

FCE Director: Prof. Roland Liblau, MD, PhD

We welcome them all to the FOCIS network. To see the full list of FCEs, visit our directory here.
